Our August theme is joy — which can feel like a big concept. A few years ago, I started looking for joy in moments instead: the first bloom of a fragrant flower, a forgotten toy on the sidewalk, a thoughtful text from a friend. #joyinmoments #momentsofjoy
There’s also joy in doing. When I feel stuck or disconnected, giving my time — even in small ways — brings me back to connection. Feeling useful reminds me of what matters.
That’s certainly been true for me here. I found CSL Ballard in the summer of 2016, at a low point in my life. I showed up on Sundays. Took a class. Volunteered here and there, in ways that didn’t require much commitment. But over time, something shifted. This became a community I care deeply about — and still do, even as it continues to evolve.
Serving together can feel more like play than work. When we show up to help one another, to create something together, joy has a way of finding us.
This Friday’s Open Mic Night is a great chance to play, create, and connect — maybe even step outside your comfort zone (in the most joyful way possible).
And if you’re looking for more ways to plug in, we have a growing list of volunteer opportunities:
Greeting on Sunday mornings
Hosting coffee or helping in the kitchen
Supporting events like Meaningful Movies or Jingle Jam
There’s a community bulletin board downstairs where you’ll start seeing more of these posted — check it out next Sunday.
A beautiful tapestry in our sanctuary says, “Show up, shine, and be of service” made by a founding practitioner. Right now, we’re powered almost entirely by volunteers — including our minister and many key roles. It’s how we keep moving forward and making space for what’s next.
However you show up — know this: your presence here matters. You matter. And sometimes, all it takes to reconnect is one small act of service or one shared moment of joy.
