Where Joy Meets Wisdom

As August’s theme of Joy winds down, Rev. Larry reminded us in his talk last Sunday that joy can exist even when life doesn’t go as planned. He emphasized that while pain is inevitable, we can still find joy by tapping into our curiosity, asking thoughtful questions, and holding a vision of our desired outcomes. It’s a lesson in orienting toward what’s possible, even amid challenges.
Following his talk, Rev. Larry led a visioning session where 24 of us came together to listen, vision, and share. We were invited to connect with our higher wisdom and, among the questions asked, identify the qualities we want in a new spiritual leader, the qualities we choose to embody as a community, and the next right steps each of us can take to support our evolution.
We also revisited our vision statement to make it more actionable. Shaped through a community process over a year ago, it now invites refreshed language — because as our community evolves, so too should how we describe ourselves and our purpose in the world. A summary document from Sunday’s session will be shared soon, and insights from this and future sessions will inform the marketing team as we further shape our strategies and messaging. Stay tuned for updates.
Last Thursday’s Meaningful Movies screening of Kiss the Ground sparked another kind of curiosity — about the impact of our everyday choices. The lively post-film discussion explored how our choices affect our planet, our communities, and our personal well-being, with participants sharing practical resources, from shopping at farmers markets to planting vegetables in place of grass. It was a good turnout for a warm August evening, and I remain grateful for our partnership with Sustainable Ballard. A shout-out to Core Council member Chris Ellard for bringing the tech and overall support.
With one more Sunday remaining in August, we’ll wrap up our theme of Joy with Rev. Liz Mirante, who expands on it through a William Blake poem. It’s the perfect time to invite a friend, neighbor, or family member to join us. A personal invitation — even offering to pick them up — is still the most powerful way to share the joy, wisdom, and connection we have here.
Looking ahead to September’s theme of Wisdom, we’ll welcome speakers who explore how wisdom shows up in our teaching — and how we can tap into it. Just as a new school year invites learning, our fall programming invites us into deeper study and conversation. Spiritual Conversations return, along with a new class on Mental Equivalents — a powerful practice for manifesting the life we desire.
Together, through joy, wisdom, and community, we’re learning, growing, and creating an ever-evolving future rooted in curiosity, accountability, and love. Thanks to all for all you do.
